As I said, things are a lot different from what I thought they would look like. Does that mean they are worse? I didn't think so, just different. It is true we no longer get to make friends just by asking some random kid, or by making up an elaborate (yet very entertaining) play scenario. Those things are definitely in the past. But, on the other hand, now we also get to do some things we never have thought to do as kids. Help a friend through a rough time, help them make big life decisions, and, my personal favorite, grow up with them. Witness how they become more mature and wise, as you do too. I believe there is a certain beauty to that.

It is true that adult friendships are complicated; there’s no debate there. However, I don’t think that’s because they are actually hard, but because we make them trickier than they should be. I am the first to put on all these expectations and rules on my friendships, and get angry at my friends when they don’t text back as fast as I think they should, or when they don’t answer the things I think should be answered in specific scenarios. Truth is, I get angry at them when they fail to celebrate special occasions as I do, or when they fall short of what my expectations of what a friend should be like are. This list of unlikely friends is not only super adorable and wholesome, but it opened my eyes to this new perspective.

It's not that as kids we were just better at making friends. It's not even that we are horrible friends right now. That is not the lesson here. I can promise you can try to ask an adult if they want to be your friend, and they will probably run the other way. Things like that don’t work anymore. But there is something very important we have to take from these pictures and our childhood friendships: to not take everything so seriously all the time. To leave expectations and judgment at the door and have a little fun with people you enjoy having around. So, even when they didn’t answer your texts the way you thought they would, or even when they forgot to call you on your birthday, for the people that we believe matter most, we should just cut them some slack. Enjoy them for who they are, and keep things simple. Didn’t manage to fit into each other's schedules for a quick meet? Let it be, send them this collection, and make the most of the time you do have with them, instead of dueling over the plans you couldn’t manage to take out of the group chat.
